The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin | Book Review

the evolution of mara dyerBlurb: Mara Dyer knows she isn’t crazy. She knows that she can kill with her mind, and that Noah can heal with his. Mara also knows that somehow, Jude is not a hallucination. He is alive. Unfortunately, convincing her family and doctors that she’s not unstable and doesn’t need to be hospitalized isn’t easy. The only person who actually believes her is Noah. But being with Noah is dangerous and Mara is in constant fear that she might hurt him. She needs to learn how to control her power, and fast! Together, Mara and Noah must try and figure out exactly how Jude survived when the asylum collapsed, and how he knows so much about her strange ability…before anyone else ends up dead!

**This WILL contain spoilers for Unbecoming, so go read it!**

Thoughts: This was definitely a super tense read and about 100x creepier then Unbecoming, but in a wonderful way. Mara goes all out crazy in this book and it’s a little terrifying to read. We learn that some of the creepy things that happen she’s doing in her sleep/she doesn’t remember doing, like moving the doll, but then we also know that Jude HAS to be behind some of the other acts, like killing the cat, leaving blood messages, and those stalker photos.

The whole deal with Jude was really freaky, especially at the end when he’s at the in-patient camp. I’m really excited for Retribution because know we know that Jude has some form of connection with Phoebe and Dr. Kells, so who knows who else he might be working with?

The messages Jude would leave for Mara were legitimately scary. The fact that he had a key to get into her house, he was in her room- watching her sleep, left her dead animals, blood messages on her mirror, it’s just super creepy. What I’m curious to know is why is Jude so determined that Mara can bring Claire back? She kills people, not the opposite. Could it be that Jude is sick in some way? Or could he have some unknown power like Mara and Noah?

We get so many Mara/Noah moments in this novel and I loved every single one of them. Noah Shaw is probably one of my favorite male leads (along with Will Herondale. I’m noticing a pattern here, sarcastic, dark hair, handsome, hm…) because he’s so caring but he’s also sassy and unpredictable. When he promised to protect Mara, he really meant it, which is so sweet and we don’t get to see someone keeping to his word as fiercely as Noah does.

The plot was so hauntingly beautiful, I hated whenever I had to put the book down! It kept me intrigued in the story and I felt so deeply connected to the characters and the storyline. One of the things that Hodkin excels at is her cliff-hangers. Not only is there that HUGE cliff-hanger at the end (which I don’t think is true), but at the end of every chapter she leaves a little something that makes you ask yourself; “What’s going to happen next?”

There are so many fantastic moments between so many character in this series, especially Mara’s interactions with her brothers. Daniel is such a good older brother, he’s kind and doesn’t try to pressure Mara into doing something she doesn’t want to do and Joseph is just so adorable and the way he bonds with Noah is hilarious. I also got giddy when we had a little Sophie/Daniel moment because, even though Sophie isn’t a super important character, she might be one of my favorites because of the way she brings out a different side of Daniel.

What’s Jude’s connection to Phoebe? What’s the deal with Lukumi? Did Mara imagine him, or was he really there in the hospital? Who really survived the end of the book? Will Stella get more development? Is Phoebe faking her insane-ness? What’s Joseph’s connection to this mysterious trial? Who really is Dr. Kells? So many unanswered questions and I’m super pumped for Retribution to come out and I can’t wait to see how this amazing series will come to an end.

  1. Ugh I loved this book SO much. And the doll! *Hides behind hands* That was so perfectly creepy, although I’m dying to know what was in the message in the doll that they accidentally burned! I cannot WAIT for Retribution!
