Books To Relieve Your Slump | Top 5 Wednesday

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly book meme created by gingerreadslainey and hosted by Sam @ThoughtsOnTomes. You find out more about T5W and the weekly topics on the Goodreads group here.

It’s funny that I just posted a discussion about getting out of a reading slump, because this week’s topic is all about books to get you out of a reading slump (aka un-slumpify!). All of the titles link to the book’s Goodread page.

Winter is a hard season for a lot of people and many of us are slumpy. Let’s talk about some books that are great for getting you out of a slump!

The Selection by Kiera Cass- By no means is this the best book/series in the world. It’s basically the bachelor in book form, with a little bit of dystopian thrown in for fun. HOWEVER, if you’re in a slumpy mood, sometimes a trashy chick flick in book form is just what you need to spark the reading bug.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo- This book is a beauty. It is a gift to us mere mortals from the god of writing, miss Bardugo. Seriously though, if you haven’t read Six of Crows, you NEED to. Yes, it is a high fantasy which I know can be difficult to get into if you’re in a slump, but the characters will charm you so much.

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan- This is my go to “I have nothing to read” book that always gets me in a reading mood. It has snark, sass, blue food, Greek mythology, and Percy Jackson in it. What more could you want?

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak- I don’t know about you all, but if I’m feeling slumpy, I’m usually not feeling too great myself. For some reason, reading a book that reflects my mood always helps me get back into reading. The Book Thief is dark, gritty, heart wrenching, and absolutely wonderful. Sometimes everyone needs a good cry (yeah, you’ll probably cry reading this).

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling- If all else fails, there’s always Harry Potter. #newlifemoto

What’s your favorite book to read to get out of a slump? Any of your favorites on this list? Was the sass out of control this post? Let’s discuss, I LOVE chatting with you all!

  1. I’m in a slump that I haven’t managed to solve yet haha, but I do love me some Lightning Thief. I wish I had gotten around to reading the rest of the series – I don’t know what stopped me.

    1. Six of Crows is every bookworms new obsession 😂 (but totally deserved), and The Selection series is kind of girly, but they are honestly not too bad if you don’t expect too much out of them! Never hurts to give it a shot, but totally understandable if they aren’t your thing.

  2. Oh boy, did The Book Thief make me bawl. If you need to get the tear ducts cleaned out, that’s a great recommendation! Haha, but really, what beautiful writing. And of course, my deepest fandom love is forever trenched in HP, but I really, really need to give “Six of Crows” a try! I’ve been seeing it everywhere!

    Thanks for the suggestions!
