Books That Ruined My Sense of Trust | Top 5 Wednesday

Top 5 Wednesday 3_15

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly book meme created by gingerreadslainey and hosted by Sam @ThoughtsOnTomes. You find out more about T5W and the weekly topics on the Goodreads group here.

I always love a good T5W that allows me to non-apologetically rant about books, and this week’s topic is perfect for that. It’s books we felt betrayed by!

Beware the Ides of March! What books (or characters) did you feel betrayed by, for whatever reason…big or small.

T5W List

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon- Upon reading the topic, this book immediately popped into my head. I have NEVER felt more betrayed by this book than any other book. I will forever be mad about the ending.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber- First of all, there’s the fact that this book is supposed to betray you with a bunch of twists and the game. However, I felt a bit betrayed by the book because I felt like we received so little magic to what we were promised.

Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas- I was promised an exciting addition to one of my favorite epic YA fantasy series. I read a NA romance novel with a tiny bit of fantasy and weird characters. Oh, how this one deeply betrayed my trust.

Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley- You know, to be totally honest I wasn’t completely sure what I was expecting when I went into this book, but it wasn’t what I ended up reading. This book was a mess, and I’m still confused by it to this day. It betrayed my (albeit odd) inherent trust in pretty covers.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by Jack Thorne- How DARE you do this to Harry Potter. This will never be the “eighth Harry Potter book”, what outlandish claims. This betrayed everything that can be betrayed by a book.

  1. I thought Everything Everything be a great read, but then I read about insta-love and I was like um no… (still haven’t read it for that reason lol). And agh, Caraval is such a hyped book with different opinions on it I’m not sure what to think! I know the characters aren’t as 3D as they could be though. And HP & TCC is actually a really hated book! I didn’t LOVE it, but I didn’t HATE it. I just didn’t like it. More of like, okay, it’s weird and blech, but not SUPER SUPER bad.

    1. EE is very instalovey, but the main issue I have with it is the big “twist” at the ending that is insanely disrespectful. Caraval was so hyped (and still is), and I’m kinda in the same position of not know what I thought about it. Oh, I thought Cursed Child was SUPER SUPER bad LOL. I mean, it had good aspects (like Scorpius), but that was about it.

    1. I have! I actually just re-watched it a few days ago! I love it so much, I think it’s a fantastic addition to the HP series, and it was SO funny. I also adore Eddie Redmayne as an actor and as a human, so that doesn’t hurt. The whole thing is wonderful. The only thing I don’t like is Johnny Depp as Grindelwald because he looks really creepy, not the charming wizard that he should be.

      1. Oh, that was so sad! But I promise all the other companions were good too. Doctor who has basically sucked for a few seasons now, but I think the writing is getting better again. But all of the 10th and 11th Doctor episodes were great.

    1. Oh no! The play must have been a little bit of a surprise 😂. I felt like the ending was a cop out too, like it had to explain the fantasy. It almost turned it into a contemporary at the end, it was so odd.

  2. The Cursed Child was a huge disappointment to me also. It had potential, but it fell short in so many ways. Perhaps it would have been better if it had been written as a book and not a play.

  3. I completely agree with you on Everything, Everything. That ending was such a major cop out that kind of ruined the book for me. And I’ve heard just as much about EoS. I’m excited to continue on with the series, but I’ll be going into EoS with some pretty low expectations lol. And YES to Magonia. I didn’t really know what to expect with that book, but it definitely wasn’t what I got haha. Great list!

    1. Thank you! Ugh, I was so annoyed with Everything, Everything. I’m actually kinda annoyed it’s being made into a movie, but U can’t do anything about that. I would definitely recommend going into EoS with low expectations 😂

  4. I totally agree with you on EOS I was so hyped for it and it ended up feeling like it was a different book to the rest of the series! Caraval is next on my tbr… Hopefully I’ll be able to make it through it!
