I think this week’s topic is great, because it lets us (the bookworms) dream of the future. That’s right, we’re discussing books that I believe will one day be considered a classic. Although, I am curious what actually classifies a book as a “classic”. Today, I’ll be going with the idea of books that I hope everyone reads in the future. All of the books on my list have impacted me in some way personally, or impacted someone I know. Continue reading

It’s funny that I just posted a discussion about getting out of a reading slump, because this week’s topic is all about books to get you out of a reading slump (aka un-slumpify!). All of the titles link to the book’s Goodread page. Continue reading

Book Tropes I’m Sick Of | Top 5 Wednesday

This week’s topic is all about bookish tropes that I’m tired of seeing everywhere. I love this topic, so let’s get into it.

What are some things you are tired of seeing that are trends in publishing? Maybe something that pops up on a lot of covers these days, or the popularity of certain tropes in a particular genre? Let it out!

Romance that doesn’t fit- This one encompasses all of the annoying love tropes that I hate. I don’t care for insta-love. I don’t want to read NA erotica in my YA fantasy, if I want that, I’ll read that genre. I also have been really bothered by relationships with an inappropriate age gap, like Vampire Academy, and Max and Lola from Lola and the Boy Next Door. Simply put, none of these fit in what I wanted to actually read.

Faces on books- Dear publishers, I’m sure we’ve had this discussion before. Faces on books are a very hard thing to pull off. To be totally honest, you miss the mark a lot. I think it’s better for all our bookshelves if you stop trying. Love, bookworms.

Unnecessary plot diversions- I always appreciate a good character/plot development. However, when there are extended scenes of characters doing things that add NOTHING to the book as a whole, it bores the crap out of me. Even if it doesn’t make sense until the very end, just wrap it up nicely!

All female friendships are fake- You know, I’m not going to deny that girls can be petty with each other, but we’re not all constantly back stabbing each other. Some of us are actually pretty good friends. I know, shocker! I want to see less misrepresented female friendships! Where’s my girl power at?

Stupidly thin pages- If you didn’t know, I am a terribly clumsy person. I drop things, I break beakers in chem class, I trip on air, and everything in between. I also get way too excited while reading sometimes, and if you keep printing books on the SUPER thin pages… I will rip them on accident. Then I’m sad, and that’s no fun.

Reading Goals for the New Year | Top 5 Wednesday

This week’s topic is all about our goals for 2017. They can be related to anything you wish, but since I have already done my blogging goals, I figured I’d share some reading goals with you all!

These do not need to be reading goals specifically, they can be any goals you want to talk about. Reading goals, blog/channel/instagram goals, personal goals…anything!

Read, read, read- I do hope this one is rather self explanatory. During 2017, I simply want to read more.

read-the-book
A little motivation for me and you

Read at least 50 books- Hooray for Goodreads! This year, I decided to set my reading challenge for a nice, easy, 50 books. I do believe that I can accomplish this, since it’s about one book a week. If I can read even more than that, I’m a fan.

Push my reading comfort zone- I’d like to read more books that fall outside my “comfort zone”. I want to read books that deal with sensitive topics that I may know very little about, or aren’t the most comfortable with.

Read more diverse books (!!)- This definitely ties in with pushing my comfort zone, but I would like to explicitly read more diverse books. I have a small list of books that have been recommended to me, but please let me know what your favorite diverse books are!

Take notes while reading- To have more concise, well-rounded, and detailed book reviews, I need to start actually taking notes while I read. This will definitely be easier on e-books, but here’s to trying something new in the new year!

Creepy Atmospheric Books | Top 5 Wednesday

This week’s topic is all about our favorite spooky books, as Halloween is just around the corner!

These can be settings that exist in books or ones you’d like to see in books. Also, if you are like me, you don’t really have to make this about horror or scary settings. You can also use eerie, atmospheric settings. Macabre settings. Eclectic settings. I’m not a scary horror person either, but I do enjoy the latter.

I’m not a big horror book/movie person, so most of these are creepy books, or just very weird.

october-26

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkins- The first book in this series is seriously creepy. You never know what’s going on, and you don’t even know if Mara herself is a reliable protagonist because she thinks she’s being haunted (which she kinda is?).

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children- While I wasn’t the biggest fan of this book, and it isn’t the creepiest thing in the world, it’s still a fun Halloween read if you aren’t a big horror person. At least the photos and the peculiars themselves are pretty weird/creepy.

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness- Here’s an extremely heart breaking creepy read for you. The story and message in this book are beautiful, and the illustrations are so hauntingly beautiful to look at. The illustrations truly do set up the atmosphere for this book.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor- If I had to pick a book that fits the macabre setting, this is definitely the one. The world that Taylor weaves is seriously one of the weirdest and slightly unsettling, but also one of the most gorgeous worlds I’ve ever read. I need to finish this series, because it’s so good.

Deep and Dark and Dangerous by Mary Downing Hahn- Alright, you’ve probably never have heard of this book, and I actually forgot about it until I was thinking about this topic. I read this book way back in elementary school (8 or 9 years ago), and I don’t remember much about it. However, I do know there’s a ghost or something in this lake and that it scared the hell out of me when I was younger.

My Favorite Ships That Sank Like The Titanic | Top 5 Wednesday

top-5-wednesday-10_19

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly book meme created by gingerreadslainey and hosted by Sam @ThoughtsOnTomes. You find out more about T5W and the weekly topics on the Goodreads group here.

This week’s topic is all about non-canon ships, and I love it.

These are the couples you love, but they never got together in canon (canon meaning: what actually happened in the text). Or that did get together, but weren’t together in the end of the series. Or a couple you ship but it’s actually impossible for them to be together because they are from different worlds, franchises, etc. Let your shipper heart run wild. I know mine will.

I decided to keep this topic in between characters from the same books/series. Be warned, there will be rants. (Yeah, there’s overlapping books from last week- sorry!)

october-19

Nikolai Lantsov and Alina Starkov- I will forever 100% be mad that this was not the main relationship of this series. I don’t even know how long ago I read these books now- 1 or 2 years, but I still ship these two hardcore. Mal sucks, the Darkling has always been kinda meh in my mind, but Nikolai is a precious little gem. #Nikolai4lyfe

Rose Hathaway and Adrian Ivashkov- If you’ve read literally any of my six Vampire Academy book reviews, you may have picked up that I absolutely despise Rose and Dimitri’s stupid relationship. Rose may have treated Adrian like crap, but they worked so much better in my opinion.

Simon Lewis and Maia Roberts- I adore Simon and Izzy, but as they are very canon, they don’t count for this. However, I did really like Simon and Maia together. Maia was his first real relationship getting over Clary, and I appreciated the fact how Clare handled the mess of a vampire and a werewolf dating.

Celaena Sardothien and Chaol Westfall- Real talk time. I don’t like Rowan and Aelin one bit, but more on that when I actually get around to finishing Empire of Storms. When reading the first three books, I was a hardcore Chaolaena fan. I think their personalities fit and they had some fun, witty banter.

Eadlyn Schreave and Kile Woodwork- While I did like who Eadlyn chose in the end of this duology, I do have to admit that she and Kile had an actual relationship, and I suppose they were pretty cute together. I’m sure America liked Kile better, considering he was Marlee’s son.
